The Ashanti Regional Minister, Peter Anarfi-Mensah, has called for reformation in the health sector especially among the nursing and midwifery units in line with the original intent of the professions to offer love and care to the sick.

He said unlike formerly, the nursing profession has become the last resort of unsuccessful students who do not have any passion for the job but join for financial reasons.

“It’s so sad that the attitudes of some nurses and midwives leave patients and pregnant women worse off than they reported at the clinic.

Mr Anarfi-Mensah said this when he joined hundreds of students of the Kwadaso SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College to mark its 10th anniversary.

The celebration was on the theme: ‘Rekindling the spirit of nursing and midwifery practice; the contribution of the Seventh-Day Adventist Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Kumasi.’

The current student population is 1,318 consisting of 389 midwifery and 929 nursing students.

The minister reckoned that good health was a pre-requisite for the sustainable development of every nation.

“There is no denying the fact that the quality of health delivery depends on dedicated and hardworking health personnel in our health institutions. It in this vein that I congratulate the founding fathers of this great institution who strived very hard to bring this school into existence,” he said.

He said government recognises and deeply appreciates the key role of the SDA church in the growth and development of the country and would continue to work towards strengthening the partnership exiting between the state and the church.

Principal of the training college announced that the school through its internally generated funds, has put up six classrooms and four offices, two hostels and a modern kitchen which currently houses the second year students at its new site at Barekese.

He said plans were also afoot to relocate the entire student body to the new site by 2017.

The principal, teachers, auxiliary staff, students and alumni who have distinguished themselves over the years were honoured.
