May’s Foundation holds free prostate, breast cancer screening

After watching her father endure the agony of prostate cancer for four years before succumbing to the ailment, Mavis Amegah, an accountant vowed to take up a ferocious fight against the disease.

Pursuant to that, she formed the May’s Foundation to help to deal with prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women.

The foundation was launched at Tanyigbe in the Ho municipality last week Saturday.

As part of the event, more the 200 men and women in the town were screened for prostate cancer and breast cancer respectively.

At the end on the screening, only one man, aged 98, tested positive.

“Our focus is to detect the cancer early in the patients and assist them to treat it,” said Ms Amegah.

She said the foundation’s volunteers included doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, and other paramedics.

She urged all and sundry to test for prostate and breast cancer readily, saying cancer was treatable.

“With less cancer cases in the communities, there will be more productivity,” Ms Amegah added.

She said the vigorous response to the screening exercise from members of the community was touching and encouraging.

Ms Amegah said the exercise would be sustained and extended beyond the confines of Tanyigbe.
