Likpe citizens support health centre rehabilitation

Some citizens of the Likpe Traditional Area in the Volta Region have contributed GH¢350,000 towards the rehabilitation of the Likpe Bakwa Health Centre.

The amount was raised by citizens both home and abroad following an appeal to save the facility from further deterioration.

The structure was deteriorating, with the roofs leaking, floods the wards when it rained.

The health centre had also become a habitat for bats and lizards.

As a result of the deterioration, attendance at the Out-patients Department (OPD) was decreasing because it became unattractive to patients.

The health centre serves a catchment area covering Akpafu, Wli, Hohoe, Fodome and Gbledi.

Appeal for refurbishment

The Daily Graphic of July 12, 2014 carried an appeal for assistance to save the health centre from further deterioration during the presentation of four electrically powered hospital beds to the maternity ward.

Ministry’s contribution

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting, the Resident Medical Doctor of the centre, Dr Moses Boni said the Ministry of Health had provided some equipment for the centre to manage diseases which would otherwise have been referred to a hospital.

They include two portable aspirators, two oxygen constriction machines, two mobile operating lights, two distilled water plants, two autoclaves and four consulting room diagnostic machines, all valued at $118,000.

Dr Boni said the centre had no vehicle, making it difficult for medical equipment, drugs and personnel to be transported appropriately.

He also called for the renewal of accreditation for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) because the prevailing one had expired.

Next target

The Paramount Chief of the Likpe Traditional Area, Nana Soglo Alloh IV, said it was the target of the people to upgrade the centre to a polyclinic by the next Lekoryi Festival.

He said upgrading the centre into a polyclinic was necessary because of the elevation of the Hohoe District into a municipality, as well as the establishment of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), with a campus at Hohoe, that might require such a facility for its community work.

Dr Kwame Nkrumah inaugurated the health centre on April 28, 1965 and it had since not seen any rehabilitation.
