Valued at GH¢35,000, the equipment, handed over to the ministry in Accra by Samsung Electronics, will be used by frontline health officials.

Each complete pack contains a face mask, safety goggles, disposable gloves, shoe covers and a plastic apron.

The Director for Mobile at Samsung Electronic West Africa, Mr Jaspreet Singh, said the company was concerned about the alarming spread of Ebola in the West African sub-region.

“As most of us may be aware, the Ebola virus is a highly contagious disease transmitted to humans by direct contact with the bodily fluid of infected living or dead animals and persons,” he said.

According to Mr Singh, Samsung was not only interested in business, but, more importantly, promoting a healthy and safe environment for the development of the people in the communities in which the company operated.

Background

Currently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed that Ebola death tolls have risen to an alarming 2,600 out of about 4,800 reported cases.

Ministry grateful

The sector minister, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, who received the items on behalf of the ministry, thanked Samsung for the assistance and called on Ghanaians to join the campaign to prevent the disease from entering the country.

He said the Ebola outbreak in West Africa was known to be one of the most challenging problems the World Health Organisation (WHO) and its partners had been battling with, necessitating the declaration of Public Emergency of International Concern by WHO.

Dr Agyemang-Mensah said this had made the ministry not to relent in its efforts to put measures in place to make sure the disease does not enter the country.

He gave an assurance that the education to ensure public safety, to keep the environment clean, as well as observation of personal hygiene to avoid cholera and other diseases, would be sustained.
