Global Outreach, NIB fund spine surgery of JHS graduate

Sixteen-year-old Patience Addo, who is suffering from Pott’s kyphosis, a medical condition otherwise known as tuberculosis of the spine, has received funds to undergo surgery to correct the defect.

The National Investment Bank (NIB) presented a cheque for GH¢30,000 covering the total cost of the surgery to the family of the patient.

Patience, who is a junior high school (JHS) graduate, explained to journalists that she went through excruciating pains anytime her condition worsened.

“Anytime I start feeling pains, I am unable to do any house chores as the pains become so unbearable and make me immobile,” she said.

Diagnosis

According to Patience, she started feeling slight pains in her back but paid little attention to it until it became severe two years ago.

She said doctors at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital later diagnosed her of a tumor in the spine.

“When the doctors told me of my condition, I became very sad as I was not able to help my aging mother with the chores at home,” she stated.

Medical attention

For his part, the medical doctor in charge of the NIB Clinic, Dr Humphrey Narh, said the donation came at the right time to help save Patience.

He noted that if the surgery was not done in time, the tumor would progress to a stage where surgery would not help.

“The more the surgery is delayed, the closer she gets to a dead end,” he added.

Appreciation

The mother of the beneficiary, Madam Rose Biney, said they had given up all hope with regard to getting funding for their daughter’s surgery until they met the Global Outreach Consortium, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

She mentioned that the NGO came to their aid by introducing them to the NIB, which in turn provided all the funds for the surgery.

Madam Biney expressed appreciation to NIB and the Global Outreach Consortium for the support.
