Vaccination will be carried out in health centres, markets and lorry stations across the country to immunise children between nine months and 14 years.

The $19 million national vaccination campaign is being funded by the Global Alliance for Vaccine Immunisation (GAVI) and the government of Ghana.

It is part of a road map for achieving accelerated measles elimination targets as part of efforts to achieve goal four of the Millenium Development Goals.

At a press briefing in Accra yesterday, the Programme Manager of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Kwadwo Odei Antwi -Agyei, noted that studies conducted in the country had revealed that 700 babies were born with Congenital Rubella Syndrome annually in Ghana.

He said more than 300 pregnant women also got infected during pregnancy.

He said the national launch of the vaccination campaign would be done in the Northern Region where rubella cases were prevalent.
