37 Military Hospital holds free breast cancer screening, education campaign

The 37 Military Hospital with allied institutions has organised a free breast screening for residents of 37 and its environs in the Greater Accra Region.

The exercise forms part of the hospital’s activities to mark this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is celebrated every October.

Besides the breast cancer screening, the residents were also educated on breast cancer, its symptoms and treatment.

This year’s breast cancer awareness campaign is on the theme “Early Detection Saves Lives.”

Speaking to Graphic Online at the programme at the 37 lorry station, the Head of Promotion, Public Health Division, Dr. Philip Nyineku said the hospital for a year has been organising breast cancer examination for the residents.

He added that the hospital has over the past one year screened about 5,000 people for breast cancer.

The Head of Non-Communicable Disease Programme of the Ghana Armed Forces, Dr Daniel Mingle also explained that the hospital decided to approach the people in order to get them tested for breast cancer since many of them on their own would not visit the hospital for testing.

He encouraged women to regularly visit the hospital for breast cancer check-up, urging men also to regularly test for breast cancer testing since men could also develop the disease.

Beneficiaries, traders, drivers as well as passers-by were handed educational materials on breast cancer.
