Work on the Gambaga Vocational Training School and accommodation facility for the inmates of the Gambaga Witches Camp and community is progressing steadily.

The project, which is aimed at encouraging vocational training at Gambaga and its surrounding areas, is intended to provide skills acquisition and decent accommodation for inmates and their children, including community members.

Sponsored by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the project followed an appeal by the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, through the Lordina Foundation.

Stage

At the time of a media tour of the project site at Gambaga last Tuesday, the project was at the roofing stage. The Supervisor of Freedoug Limited, sub-contractors of the project, Mr Ahmed Chiranaa Daraa, said about 75 per cent of the work had been completed. He gave an assurance that the project, which began in 2013, would be completed by the end of this year as scheduled.

Situation

Currently, there are 89 thatched structures serving as houses for the 93 women and 41 children in the camp.

The First Lady expressed hope that when complete, the project would help improve on the quality of life of the inmates, their dependants and other beneficiaries.

In addition, she said the construction of the vocational institute was an opportunity to provide employable skills to women and children to earn a living.

She, however, expressed concern that despite the extensive education  on the ostracisation of alleged witches, the practice was still going on in some parts of the country.

The practice, she said, was not in accordance with  the  tenets of  the  1992 Constitution, which enshrined  the  rights of all Ghanaians.
