Western Region to be made economic hub

Nii lantey Vanderpuye, Deputy Minister for TradeThe Ministry of Trade and Industry has embarked on a series of activities in the Western Region to transform the region into a hub of economic activities to create jobs, improve livelihoods and alleviate poverty.

As part of the activities, the ministry has acquired a vast land in the region to be developed into a free trade centre.

Already, GH¢2.5 million has been paid to the allodial custodians of the land.

The Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, announced this at an outreach programme organised by the ministry in Takoradi to educate operators in the trade and industrial sector on the various policies, programmes, strategic initiatives and interventions being undertaken by the ministry.

The objective of the programme was to help promote a vibrant trade and industry sector with the view to fostering the growth and development of a strong economy that made for job creation, revenue generation and improved sustainable livelihoods led by the private sector.

Nii Lante said the ministry was using the programme to establish a compelling identity to increase stakeholders’ awareness and knowledge of the ministry and its activities and promote positive attitudes and canvass support and commitment for the ministry and its activities.

He said it was also intended to showcase the achievements of the ministry, including its agencies, and their impact on the livelihoods of Ghanaians.

He underscored the fact that communication had become a key tool for initiating, nurturing and maintaining good corporate relations with the public, adding, “Communication is now an indispensable management tool to educate and inform the people about policies, programmes and activities which are geared towards improving the lives of the people.”

A Deputy Director at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Mr Kofi Addo, stressed the need for a vibrant trade and industry sector to enhance the country’s production activities.

He said the country needed mass industrialisation to boost its manufacturing sector.
