Two nursery pupils of the St Francis Preparatory School at Dompem in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality in the Western Region died when a portion of the their school’s wall collapsed on them after a heavy downpour.
According to the police at the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, the incident occurred last Monday afternoon when the children were urinating near the wall.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Paul Ayitey, said during the downpour last Monday, the school authorities kept the children indoors after school hours for the rain to subside before releasing them to go home.
He said the school authorities explained to the police that on the blind side of the teachers who were taking care of the children, two children— four-year-olds— sneaked out to respond to the call of nature.
Unfortunately, in the process of urinating, a portion of the school’s wall collapsed on them.
The children were said to have been rescued by the school authorities and rushed to the Tarkwa Government Hospital but they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies of the children have since been released to their families for burial.
Meanwhile, the police are carrying out further investigations into the case.
