University of Ghana introduces collegiate system

The University of Ghana (UG) has launched its collegiate system of management in the running of academic units.

Under the new system, all the various academic units have been organised into four colleges, with each having various schools under it.

The four are the College of Health Sciences, the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, the College of Humanities and the College of Education.

The system, which is expected to come into full operation in the 2014/2015 academic year, is aimed at decentralising the administration of academic programmes to make them more efficient and effective.

It is also aimed at giving students a greater opportunity as far as the selection of programmes of study is concerned.

Collegiate system

Explaining the collegiate system at the inauguration ceremony in Accra, the Vice-Chancellor of the UG, Prof Ernest Aryeetey, said faculties and departments had been merged to form four colleges.

He added that the reason behind the merger was to facilitate the achievement of the vision of attaining a world-class university status by 2020. 

According to him, the university had undergone various changes since its establishment to become a top-notch institution in Africa. 

How the system was arrived at

The Chairman of the University Council, Dr Justice S.K. Date-Baah, said after collating views from the various deans and lecturers, a consensus was reached which indicated that the collegiate system was the best way to go.

Units under the various colleges 

The College of Health Sciences consists of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences, the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the Centre for Tropical and Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

The College of Basic and Applied Sciences comprises the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, the School of Biological Sciences, the School of Agriculture, the School of Engineering Sciences, the School of Veterinary Medicine, the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies, the Institute of Applied Science and Technology, the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement, the Biotechnology Research Centre, the Livestock and Poultry Research Centre (LIPREC), Legon, the Soil and Irrigation Research Centre (SIREC), Kpong, and the Forest and Horticultural Crops Research Centre (FOHCREC), Kade.

The College Of Humanities also consists of the Business School, the School of Law, the School of Arts, the School of Languages, the School of Social Sciences, the School of Performing Arts, the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, the Institute of African Studies, the Regional Institute for Population Studies, the Centre for Social Policy Studies, the Centre for Migration Studies, the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy, the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy, the Language Centre and the University of Ghana Accra City Campus.

The College Of Education is made up of the School of Information and Communication Studies, the School of Education and Leadership and the School of Continuing and Distance Education.
