According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fred Newton Binka, the contractors, China Yanjian Group Company, had informed the school authorities of the completion of the project and were ready to hand over by the end of this week after which the President is expected to inaugurate it at a later date.

The Chinese-sponsored project started over three years ago after President Evans Atta Mills cut the sod for its commencement.
The new campus has facilities such as the central administration, office complex, auditorium, lecture halls, laboratories and a powerhouse.

Prof. Binka stated that other facilities such as ICT, a functioning library, staff and student accommodation were available to enhance effective teaching and learning.

Matriculation

He made this known during a matriculation ceremony to welcome 79 out of 84 fresh students to the university to undertake the first-ever sandwich programmes in public health nursing, midwifery and nursing.

The programmes would be carried out during the long vacations between July and August within a period of three years.
He indicated that the UHAS was the first publicly funded and state university established in the Volta Region and dedicated only to issues of health in the country.

The vice chancellor said the university authorities were taking steps to improve the existing facilities, as well as develop new structures at both campuses at Ho and Hohoe. He added that they were currently constructing the administration block and the school of Public Health at the Hohoe campus.

Achievements

In a welcome address to the students, Prof. Binka stated that they had chosen the right university for their studies and, therefore, must study hard to achieve their desired goals.

According to him, ‘although UHAS is a young university, we can boast some achievement over some older universities.

As part of the achievements, Prof. Binka mentioned that the medical laboratory science students association of UHAS emerged winners in a quiz competition organised by the Federation of Ghana Medical Laboratory Science Students Association.

He said the students had floored competitors from five other tertiary institutions such as the University of Ghana, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the University of Cape Coast, the College of Health, Kintampo, and the Premier School of Medical Laboratory.

Right university

He encouraged the new students to cultivate the spirit of discipline, adding that ‘no human endeavour attains the designed success without discipline.

Prof.Binka further advised them to allow the oath and the rules and regulations to guide them to be law-abiding in order to enjoy their stay in the university.
