Stabbed to death

Two teenagers clash over mangoes, one killed

A misunderstanding between two teenagers over mangoes turned bloody when one stabbed the other to death at High Tension, near Awomaso in the Ejisu municipality in the Ashanti Region.

The deceased, 15, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi after his 13-year-old friend had stabbed him beneath the breast with a knife.

Mangoes

Narrating the incident to The Mirror, a police source said on April 17, 2008, the assailant, who had visited his sister at High Tension from Gyakye Pramso in the Bosomtwi District, went to pluck some mangoes and the deceased asked him for some.

It said the assailant refused to offer the deceased some of the mangoes, which turned into a misunderstanding, but they were separated.

The source said in the evening, the assailant was sent to buy some items from a shop in the area and while on his way, he carried oranges and a knife with which he peeled the fruit to eat.

It alleged that when the two met, they started exchanging words again and, in the process, the deceased allegedly kicked the assailant and he fell.

It said the assailant claimed that the deceased had first stabbed him on the shoulder.

The source said in the process of defending himself, the assailant drew his knife which pierced through the deceased’s breast, leading to profuse bleeding.

According to the source, the deceased was referred to KATH where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Bereaved family

But the family of the deceased insists that the stabbing was not about mangoes but a deliberate decision of the culprit to kill their relative.

Narrating the sad incident to The Mirror, a brother of the deceased, Mr Kwame Kusi, said on that fateful day, the assailant, who had gone to collect a DVD from the deceased’s house, promised to offer the DVD to another person.

He said when the deceased heard the promise made by the suspect, he asked how that could be done, since the assailant did not have a DVD to give out.

He said the assailant, who did not take kindly to the claim that he would not be able to give out a DVD, insulted the deceased’s parents, which compelled the deceased to threaten to beat him up. He said a friend of the deceased, Gideon Boakye, restrained the deceased from engaging in any fisticuffs with the suspect and asked his friend to calm down, which he did.

Stabbing

Mr Kusi alleged that later at dusk, the assailant, who was on an errand, saw the deceased sitting with a friend around a video centre and started pouring invectives on him and threatened to beat him up.

He alleged that the suspect, who was already armed with a sharp knife, continued to provoke the deceased and went into a dark area and asked the deceased to dare him if he was a man.

He said incensed by the verbal attacks on him, the deceased rushed to the dark area but he was stabbed on the chest.
