Two men have been arrested for allegedly duping people under the pretext of selling cars to them.
The suspects, Richard Osei Bonsu, a 41-year-old trader, and Kwabena Boakye, 40, a painter, are said to often pose as car dealers and take prospective buyers to garages but end up defrauding them.
A third suspect, identified only known as Burger, is still on the run.
Car dealers
The Odorkor District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Abraham Acquaye, told the Daily Graphic that so far six different cases had been reported against the suspects, with their victims losing a total of GH¢110, 000.
Mr Acquaye said on May 17, 2014, a driver, Mr Samuel Swanzy, from the Afram Plains reported to the Odorkor Police that two men had duped him of GH¢10,000, being part payment for a vehicle.
He explained that a colleague driver of Mr Swanzy had linked him to the said car dealer in Accra in May 2013 when the victim expressed interest in buying a second-hand truck.
Meeting with suspects
According to him, Swanzy arrived in Accra on May 17, 2013 with his brother, whose name has been withheld, to meet Bonsu.
He said Bonsu was said to have led Mr Swanzy and his brother to a garage at Asoredanho near Dansoman Junction in Accra where he pointed to a second-hand truck which he claimed belonged to his brother.
After inspecting the truck, Mr Swanzy expressed interest in buying it but was told the documents covering the vehicle were with the said brother at Mallam in Accra.
Mr Acquaye said Bonsu then took Mr Swanzy and his brother to a house at Gbawe where they met Boakye, who was introduced as the owner of the truck.
He said after bargaining for the price of the truck, the suspects demanded and collected GH¢10,000 from Mr Swanzy as part payment for the truck.
The police boss said after paying the money, the suspects agreed to accompany Mr Swanzy and his brother to Asoredanho to drive the truck to the Driver Vehicle and Licencing Authority office for registration.
Suspects bolt with money
On their way to Asoredanho, he said the suspects took to their heels at a point and all efforts made by Mr Swanzy and his brother to trace them proved futile.
Mr Acquaye said the victims then went to Asoredanho where the truck was parked to take delivery of it only to be told that the truck did not belong to the suspects.
The Odorkor Commander disclosed that five other victims claimed the same modus operandi was used by the two suspects to dupe them.
