The Tema Metropolitan Assembly has named a road and roundabout at the Tema Community Three CMB Quarters area after the former Presidential Advisor, Mr Paul Victor Obeng.

The P.V. Obeng Roundabout and P.V. Obeng Avenue are to honour the man, who, until his death a year ago, chaired the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC).

According to the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, the decision to name the road after the former presidential advisor was to recognise his contributions to the development of the country and Tema, where he resided.

Attachment to Tema

Mr Obeng, who lived the greater part of his working life in Tema, was instrumental in the development of the metropolis in particular, as well as the entire country.

“He had deep thoughts about how Tema could be made better at all times," the MCE said.

Mr Odamtten recalled PV's 2014 presence at the May Day event in Tema, where he addressed workers and shared some thoughts on how the development agenda for the country and Tema should be like.

He said the memory of PV would live on because the ideas espoused were deep and would transcend generations.

The MCE said plans were advanced to rehabilitate the 20-kilometre stretch of road, including the oval from the TDC office area through the Tema Senior High School, Tema Polyclinic - Agbamame roads, as part of the grand plan for the regeneration of Tema, a plan which was birthed by Mr Obeng.

The P.V Obeng Roundabout and P.V. Obeng Avenue are both located on that stretch of road.

Tireless public servant

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, described Mr Obeng as a very admirable unifier and a tireless public servant who did his best for Ghana.

He recalled PV's advice at the National Economic Forum held at Senchi, where he urged all Ghanaians to be nationalistic in the quest for a sustainable national development.

Nii Laryea urged Ghanaians to honour his memory by developing a nationalistic attitude just as he did.

the spokesperson of a group known as Friends of PV, Mr Ben Sakitey Tetteh, said he impacted many of his friends in a number of ways, adding, "if we all internalise those talents and see the good that he taught us, we can live his memory forever".

Present at the unveiling ceremony were Nana Kwame Mensah Bonsu, Otumfuo’s Ahenenanahene, Baffour Kotei Kutin Sraman II, Bremahene, Mr Kwame Sara-Mensah, former Minister of State, Mr Akwasi Oppong Fosu, Minister of State at the office of the President, Brigadier Francis Agyemfra, a former Chief of Defence Staff, Rev. Fr Isaac Maunger, Parish Priest, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, the widow, children and other relations as well as friends of the late P.V. Obeng.
