Three suspects arrested in NPP, NDC clash at Nkrankwanta

The police in the Bono Region have arrested three people suspected to have links with last Saturday's clash between some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Nkrankwanta that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to two people.

The incident happened at Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District following a disagreement between the two groups.

Both groups had mobilised themselves in the area in an attempt to ensure that foreigners were not transported from neighbouring Cote d'Ivoire to register in the mop up mass registration exercise which was being organised by the Electoral Commission at its District office in the area.

The clash reportedly occurred at a place where the supporters had grouped themselves separate from where the EC's district office was located.

The police told Graphic Online that the incident happened at about 500 metres away from the EC's district office.

The three suspects arrested by the police are Ali Musah, 33, Ibrahim Acquah, 33 and Amos Aning, 38.

The Bono Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong told Graphic Online that the three sustained gunshot and cutlass wounds during the clash which occurred at about 5.35 pm on Saturday, August 8.

According to him, one Mitsubishi pick up vehicle and a motorbike were set ablaze whilst a Toyota Tundra vehicle was also damaged.

Chief Inspector Oppong added that the three suspects had been sent to the Police Divisional Headquarters at Dormaa-Ahenkro to assist with investigations.

He said the two injured persons, Kwame Gutan, 33 and Elliasu Gabriel, 45 were responding to treatment at the Nkrankwanta Government Hospital while the remains of the deceased is at the Dormaa-Ahenkro Presbyterian Hospital for preservation.

"The area is under control", Chief Inspector Oppong stated.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Dormaa West, Mr Ali Maiga Halidu alleged that the gunshots were fired by the security men who tried to intervene during the clash.
