The three were rushed to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital, where they are said to be responding to treatment.

The victims are Margaret Osei Koranteng, Ama Abrafi and Kofi Agyei, all workers at the bakery.

The armed men were also said to have robbed some of the customers of the bakery of their money.

Although some of the workers at the bakery said they believed that the attack was in reaction to a confrontation between a worker of the bakery and a member of the gang earlier in the day, the police said they suspected the incident to be a well-planned armed robbery.

The gang of three, armed with assault rifles, is said to have opened fire on workers and customers of the bakery, injuring three in the process.

Police

Confirming the incident to the Daily Graphic, the KNUST District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Ransford Nsiah, said there had been an altercation between a worker of the bakery and another person earlier in the day but the two were separated.

He said the workers assumed that it was the person who had the fight with the worker who had returned with his gang to attack the bakery.

However, according to Mr Nsiah, police investigations indicated that around 4 p.m. on Thursday, a known criminal in the area had been seen loitering around the area.

At 9 p.m. the same day, he said, the suspected criminal had been seen in the vicinity, and less than two hours after he had left, the attack took place.

Suspected armed robbery

He said what aroused the suspicion of the police that it was an armed robbery incident was the fact that the gang had asked for the person who usually kept the bakery’s money.
