On a glitzy night when food and music, laced with few speeches, flowed, she took her dominance of the annual awards to another level sweeping five awards.

Besides Ms Ngmenba-Engaa taking up a three-week course in a New York Culinary Institute as her prize, she also received hampers of assorted gifts, wax prints and a carton of frozen chicken.

Winners

Contesting against her peers from six other technical universities, Ms Ngmenba-Engaa also picked the most hygienic and safety conscious contestant, the tastiest meal, the most creative and best presentation, and the most organised contestant awards.

Other winners are Mr Mohammed Suleiman of the Accra Technical University, who placed second and Mr Michael Amoah of the Sunyani Technical University, who came third, while Ms Rhoda R. Obenu-Teye, received a prize for being the most time conscious contestant.

Mr Ebenezer Nartei Nartey was given a citation for his dedication to the cause of students he prepared for the competition.

I feel very happy

Even before the ultimate award was announced, Josephine’s friends and colleagues were ready for a victory lap and when the results were announced, a few broke into tears.

On the podium, words failed her, “I feel very happy,” was the only words she could utter.

However, speaking to the Daily Graphic, Ms Ngmenba-Engaa, whose recipe included using chicken to prepare mixed vegetable salad, said she would use her time in the United States to learn valuable skills that would bring respect to the hospitality industry in Ghana.

The competition

The competition involved the use of American and Ghanaian chicken to create recipes which are tasty.

The USA Poultry and Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) organised the contest in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers.

The competition, which is in its third year, is aimed at popularising chicken menus in Ghana, and to urge consumers to eat more chicken.

Supporting poultry industry

At the ceremony, the United States (US) Ambassador to Ghana, Ambassador Robert P. Jackson, said Ghana was the second largest market for US poultry in sub-Saharan Africa last year.

According to statistics, 41,000 tonnes of poultry was exported from the US to Ghana.

He said the poultry industry relationship between Ghana and the US was a seamless relationship that was mutually beneficial between the US and Ghana.

To help strengthen Ghana’s poultry industry, the ambassador said his country was supporting two projects in Ghana to help improve the entrepreneurship skills of local poultry producers.
