The middle of the bridge has caved in, while the pillars under the bridge have several cracks exposing the iron roads used in constructing it.

As a result, commuters to and from those communities have to walk to either side of the bridge to board vehicles to continue their journey.

The affected communities include Mampong, Akromakrom, Ahanta Abuasa, Bowohomodin, Kwesikrom, Ahanta Nkran, and Aprepreso.

Residents of Kansawurodu attributed the collapse of the bridge to its excessive use  by heavy-duty trucks in new developments beyond Kansawurodo and Mampong.

Currently, members of the affected communities, who are mainly farmers, said their produce were getting rotten on the field as vehicles refused to move to the area to convey them to market centres in the city.

When the Daily Graphic visited the scene, several vehicles were stranded on both sides of the bridge.

The Urban Roads Engineer for STMA, Mr R. K. Mensah, when contacted, acknowledged the problem and said the only solution was to construct a new bridge.

In the interim, he said, the unit would create a bypass to enable commuters to transport their produce to the city centre.
