‘Survivor’ killed in police shootout

A search on the vehicle used by the suspected robbers revealed ammunition, a pistol, a single-barrelled gun and nine cartridges.

The Kasoa District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Ebenezer Asare, said armed robbers had, for the past three weeks, changed the way they operated in Kasoa.

Over the period, he said, the police received complaints from three mobile phone card dealers, while last Friday alone the robbers shot a customer at a shop in the town.

“For some time now we have been able to contain them until they changed their modus operandi three weeks ago. When we realised that, we also changed our strategy,” he said.

Chief Supt Asare said ‘Survivor’, who had been operating from the Buduburam Camp, was one of those on the police wanted list.

He said the camp had become an abode for nationals from Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria and that after the expiration of the refugee status of Liberian nationals, others had moved to the place under the guise of integration with the Liberians.

He said the government should, therefore, take over the refugee camp and put up a divisional police headquarters at the place to serve Kasoa and Winneba.

Chief Supt Asare promised to take the matter up with the National Security in order to curb the activities of armed robbers operating from the camp.

The police, he said, would intensify their patrols and extend intelligence in and around Kasoa.

He assured the people of the town that the police were doing their best to ensure that people went about their normal activities peacefully.

“The police will take the fight to the criminals,” he said.
