Students learn ICT applications at GCNet

Students from the Computer Science Department of the Ho Technical University have completed a day’s educational tour of the Ghana Community Network Services Limited (GCNet) as part of their practical training.

The tour provided the 40 students with an opportunity to learn about the operations of GCNet and its mandate to increase revenue generation in the country.

They toured the infrastructure and network facilities of the company and were also given presentations on the operations of GCNet, its role in Ghana’s trade facilitation and revenue mobilisation activities, as well as how those activities contribute to national development and livelihood enhancement.

Innovation and creativity

During an interaction with the students, the Human Resource Manager of GCNet, Mrs Akosua Asamoah, advised them to be innovative and creative to find their place in the fast changing technological environment.

“As you are acquiring knowledge and skills and preparing for the world of work, there is the need to also develop a positive work attitude in this competitive era. Attitude at the workplace is very important. A negative attitude will lead to less productivity,” Mrs Asamoah admonished.

She said hosting students from tertiary institutions was in line with GCNet’s corporate social responsibility programme in education to help bridge the gap between academia and industry as the company shared practical industry knowledge with students.

A training coordinator of GCNet, Mr Agyaaku Nkansah, told the students that GCNet had developed and deployed Ghana’s single window platform for processing trade transactions and customs clearances.

He said the single window platforms deployed included front-end Electronic Messaging Platform (the TradeNet) and a back-end System (the Ghana Customs Management System) that allowed for the processing of declarations.

University

A lecturer of the university, Mr Carlos Ankoro, who accompanied the students, commended the company for the Information and communications Technology (ICT) applications it had deployed to ease the business environment and for revenue mobilisation.

The visit, he said, would enable the students to link the basic information technology principles taught in the classroom to a typical enterprise set-up.
