Stakeholders propose ‘co-payment’ system under NHIS

Stakeholders at a forum on 10 years of implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) are proposing ‘co-payment’ as a way out for its successful operation.

According to them this would help ensure the prescription and use of quality drugs for the treatment of patients.

The civic society forum, which was organised by the Universal Access to Healthcare Campaign in Accra yesterday, was on the theme: “Ten years of the NHIS in Ghana-Perspectives from Civil Society”.

The forum, which was chaired by the Director of the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS), Dr Esther Offie Aboagye, brought together healthcare providers, officials of the NHIS, the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health.

In proposing a ‘co-payment system’, there was, however, a sharp contradiction by other stakeholders who opposed the proposal, saying it would bring back the old cash-and-carry system in healthcare delivery.
