The soldier, whose name has been given only as Staff Officer Owusu by the police, was in the company of other members of the Bole Bamboi District Security Committee (DISEC), when the incident happened.

Members of the DISEC, including the soldier, had crossed the White Volta at Ntereso, a farming community in the Bole Bamboi District, on their way to Dollar Power,  but were ambushed by some unknown assailants, who opened fire on them, resulting in the death of the soldier.

Two other military officers, whose identities were not immediately given, and a Bole Bamboi District Officer, whose name was given only as Wiafe, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Bole Government Hospital for treatment.

A police source at the Bole District Police station that confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic said the incident happened yesterday morning when members of the DISEC, as part of their mandate, decided to visit Dollar Power to assess the security situation in the area.

According to the source, apart from galamsey activities, the place is bedeviled with chieftaincy and land disputes.

As of the time of filing this report, the police had not been able to establish whether the attack on the DISEC members was either carried out by galamsey operators or armed robbers.

When contacted, the Bole Bamboi District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr James Jaaga, confirmed the incident, but could not give details.
