Six suspected armed robbers face court for robbery and murder

Six suspected armed robbers have been arraigned before the Bolgatanga and Bawku Magistrate Courts in the Upper East Region for alleged robbery and murder.

Three of the suspects were part of the 34 suspects arrested last Saturday, July, 24, 2021 in a dawn swoop carried out by the Upper East Regional Police Command in the Zebilla and Tilli forest areas.

The rest were arrested at their respective hideouts within the Obuasi mining community at Gbane near Tongo in the Talensi district on July 28, 2021 by the Upper East Regional Police Surveillance Team.

The six suspects are, Baba Mustapha a.k.a. Ziba,39,Aziz Ibrahim,21 and Osman Imbilla,35 who were allegedly involved in some robberies in Zebilla and the Tilli forest areas.

The rest who were arrested upon intelligence at their respective hideouts in the Obuasi mining community by the Upper East Regional Surveillance Team were, Aka Lek a.k.a. Mandella, 32, Isaac Kolog, 19 and David Abateme, 22.

A release issued Friday, July 30,2021,by the Public Affairs Officer of the Upper East Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr David Fianko-Okyere, stated that Mustapha ,Ibrahim and Imbilla were remanded into police custody by the Bawku Magistrate Court on Tuesday, July 27,2021.They are to re-appear on Tuesday, August 3, 2021.

According to the release, Mustapha, Ibrahim and Imbilla were suspected to be the robbers terrorizing commuters on the Bolgatanga-Bawku highway.

It further explained that regarding the rest of the suspects, Lek, Kolog and Abateme, they were on Thursday, July 29,2021, remanded into police custody by the Bolgatanga Magistrate Court to re-appear on August 12,2021.

Retrieval

The release stated that seven BB Cartridges and one bayonet were retrieved from the room of one of the suspects, Aka Lek, while a black unregistered Yamaha Seirus motorbike was found in David Abateme's room.

Upon interrogation, three suspects, Aka Lek, David Abateme and Isaac Kolog confessed their involvement in a night robbery of a cash amount of GH¢10,000 and gold valued at GH¢110,000 from a household at Gbane near Tongo last year October 28,2020.

The three robbers also confirmed selling the gold to a dealer at GH¢40,000. The suspects further led the police to the hideouts of their two accomplices who have been the brain behind their operations and subsequently provided them with two AK 47 assault rifles used in the robbery.
