Second batch BECE placements out

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has completed the second batch of placement of students who sat for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) into senior high and technical institutes.

A total of 136,385 candidates who were initially not placed because of tough competitions were placed into their various schools of choice under the second exercise which was completed yesterday.

This brings the total number of candidates placed so far to 351,881, representing 89.97 per cent. During the first placement exercise last month, 215,496 candidates were placed.
Meanwhile, 40,331 candidates are still yet to be placed.

Sources at the  GES said a third round of placement was most likely.

With the second placement, candidates can text their index numbers to the short code 1060 on any network to know which school they have been placed.

Three hundred and ninety-two thousand  and eighty-two (392,082) candidates from more than 11,000 public and private schools sat for the examination in June, this year.

Last year, 375,123, representing 99.8 per cent, of the 376,001 candidates who wrote the BECE, were successfully placed in senior high schools and technical institutes.

The Ministry of Education said all   (BECE) candidates who scored grade seven in a core subject but performed well in the other subjects would be considered for placement in the second phase of the Computerised Schools, Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

“Those who could not meet the criteria; those who got lower grades in one of the core subjects -English, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies- but had very good grades in all other subjects would be considered for placement as well, depending on the vacancies available,” a deputy minister of Education, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, said after the release of the first placement.

Under the criteria for selection, a candidate is not supposed to score more than grade five in the core subjects and more than grade six in any other two subjects.

The admission process for first year students started from October 16, 2013.
