Sahara Group supports flood, fire victims

The Sahara Group, a leading privately owned oil, gas, energy and infrastructure conglomerate with operations in Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, has extended a hand of support to victims of the June 3 flood and fire disasters in Accra.

The support comprised medical supplies, bedding materials, soaps and detergents, food items, as well as financial aid, all with the purpose of offsetting the medical bills of the injured and to ameliorate their suffering.

The Country Manager of Sahara Group in Ghana, Mr Tosin Etomi, said the company, being a key stakeholder in the Ghanaian economy, was touched by the plight of the victims of the disasters and was, therefore, moved to provide some measure of support for those who survived.

“Sahara shares the pain of every Ghanaian affected by this disaster and we pray for speedy recovery for those in the hospital. It is a privilege for Sahara to stand in solidarity with Ghana at this time.

“Sahara hopes the money included in the support will go a long way to defray the cost of treatment and rehabilitation of those who suffered varying degrees of injuries,” he said.

Mr Etomi further extended sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster, adding, “We pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and also pray for the wellbeing of the grieving families.”

Distribution

The group distributed the items in collaboration with Joy FM, an Accra-based radio station.

The radio station launched an emergency relief fund after the disaster and has since been at the forefront coordinating the receipt of donations from public-spirited individuals and organisations.

Besides what was donated by Sahara the station received a cheque for an undisclosed amount from the group.

Other donations

In another development, Sahara made a cheque donation for an undisclosed amount to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The acting National Coordinator of NADMO, Brigadier General Francis Vib Sanziri, who received the cheque, expressed his gratitude to the group for the gesture.

The city of Accra on the night of June 3 this year suffered one of the worst disasters to hit the nation. Large parts of the metropolis got flooded, including the Kwame Nkrumah Circle where a massive explosion at a fuel filling station led to the loss of over 100 lives.
