Revealed: Nayele had $23,000, £6000 when arrested

Nayele Ametefe, the Ghanaian lady who was Tuesday morning jailed eight years and eight months for transporting  12 kilogrammes of cocaine into the UK, had $23,000 and £6000 in her possession when she was arrested.

The money was said to be Nayele’s payment for carrying the cocaine.

This was revealed at the Isleworth Crown Court in the UK just before she was sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison.

Graphic Online's correspondent in court, Nana Sifa Twum reported that her defense lawyer James Scobine who was brought in to replace Dexter Henry told the court that a 50-year-old woman hired his client for US$23,000 and a bonus of £6000 for the transaction of which she was arrested.

The court also set July 6, 2015 to decide on the US$23,000 and £6000 found on her at the time of her arrest at the Heathrow Airport.

The street value of the cocaine she carried was said to be £1.9 million.

Nayele was arrested on November 10 at the Heathrow Airport after attempting to enter the UK with the cocaine in her hand luggage.

She was subsequently charged with Class A drug trafficking and was arraigned before court.

A total of 12 people have been arrested in Ghana in connection with the case.

They include the two ladies; Nana Akua Amponsah and Sadalia Sandra Nuhu who reportedly travelled with Nayele but absconded after the latter was nabbed by the Police in the UK.

Also, three public officials have been charged with abetment of crime; exportation of narcotic drugs, contrary to sections 56 (c) and 1 (1) of the Narcotic Drugs (Control, Enforcement and Sanctions) Act, 1990 (PNDC law 236).

They are a Deputy Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abiel Ashitey Armah, Theophilus Kissi of the Research Department attached to the VVIP Lounge at the Kotoka International Airport and Abubakar Ahmed, a civil servant.
