The new police post, which is expected to serve North Legon Valley, Akporman and surrounding communities, has been handed over to the Ghana Police Service.

Form neighbourhood watch

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACOP) Mr Timothy Yoosa Bonga, said the government was doing its best to provide the needs of the Ghana Police Service but that budgetary constraints had constrained these efforts.

He described assistance from the citizenry as very refreshing and called on other communities to emulate the example of the North Legon Valley Residents Association.

He urged communities to form neighbourhood watch committees to complement the efforts of the police in fighting crime.

Crime in the area

The Chairman of the North Legon Valley Residents Association, Mr David Nyoagbe, said there had been rampant armed robbery and bag-snatching incidents in the area in recent times, as a result of which the residents decided to put up the police post to ensure police presence in the community.

Apart from the police station, he said, the residents had undertaken a GH¢30,000 project which included street-naming, street lighting and road construction for easy accessibility.

The Madina Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Nantogmah Aggrey Yakubu, urged the residents to give the police the necessary cooperation in their efforts to combat crime.

The Ga East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr John Kwao Sackey, in a speech read on his behalf, said the assembly would secure motorbikes for policemen who would be posted to the station to facilitate their movement.
