The SIT, under the leadership and supervision of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, was commissioned on March 4, 2015 to expedite investigations into the scam and submit its report to the Police Council by March 20, 2015.

According to police sources, the team had completed its assignment and written a comprehensive report.

Suspects behind scam

The sources said all the suspects behind the scam, especially the kinpins, had been arrested and those who were earlier arrested, namely, Aisha Asumda, Mafin Yaano Williams, Joshua Palba, 35, Ariel Lamptey, 31, and Wuni Salinko, alias Mohammed Mamudu, 39, were already before the courts charged with the offence.

Those arrested during the investigations by the SIT would soon be arraigned.

At a meeting following the scam, the Police Council endorsed initiatives by the administration and, accordingly, asked the SIT to submit its report by March 20, 2015.

The council further asked the administration to apply all the disciplinary procedures within the Ghana Police Service to ensure that due process was followed in dealing with any misconduct.

Recruitment scandal

A recruitment scandal hit the Ghana Police Service on February 28, 2015 when scores of young people thronged a number of police training schools across the country to begin training.

Seven persons, including two police officers, were initially arrested in connection with the fraud.

COP Timbilla

The investigation by the SIT led to the uncovering of what it said was evidence implicating the Director-General of the Human Resource Department of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Patrick Timbilla.

Mr Timbilla was subsequently interdicted.
