Remand prisoner jailed - For smuggling hemp into cell

A remand prisoner at the Dansoman police cells, Nashiru Ibrahim, who attempted to convey Indian hemp concealed in two sachets of water into the cell was has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by the Accra Circuit Court.

Also in the dock was his accomplice, Jennifer Mensah, who allegedly brought the drug concealed in the two sachets of water.

Ibrahim, who was charged with abatement of crime, pleaded guilty, whereas Mensah denied the charge of supplying narcotics.

Ibrahim, who was on remand for robbery, explained that he had asked Mensah to give money to someone in exchange for some items.

According to him, he knew of the items but Mensah was not aware of the contents of the sachets.

The court, therefore, admitted Mensah to a bail sum of GH¢10,000, with two sureties, one of whom should be a public servant.

She is to reappear before the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, on January 18.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Reindolph Agyemang told the court Friday that the complainants were two police officers at the Dansoman Police Station.

He said about 3 p.m. on January 4, 2013, Mensah went to the Dansoman Police Station to visit Ibrahim who was in custody on a charge of robbery.

He said shortly after the visit, Ibrahim pleaded with the police personnel on duty to release GH¢25 to Mensah to enable her to buy some items in town for him.

The police obliged and a few minutes later Mensah returned to the charge office with two sachets of water, one of which had been opened and put in a black plastic bag.

DSP Agyemang said the police personnel became suspicious and opened the plastic bag, only to find Indian hemp concealed in the bag.

Mensah was, therefore, arrested.

She told the police that it was Ibrahim who had asked him to buy the drug for him.
