Rawlings calls on Russia to renew influence in developing world

Ghana’s former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, has called on Russia to re-ignite its political and economic influence in Africa and the developing world.

The former President said: “Russian influence especially in the developing world has been on the decline since the collapse of the bipolar balance.”

Flt Lt Rawlings made the call during a courtesy visit by Professor Sergey Kwami Kotov-Dartey, a professor in law, economics and political science and President of the National Agency on Building, a non-governmental institution, which facilitates expert activity in construction and infrastructural development, based in Tver, Russia.

He said: “President Putin’s principled leadership on issues has however gained a great deal of respect and admiration from the world at large and called on “corporate actors in Russia to take advantage of that goodwill and become more proactive especially in the developing world as they used to do.”

Professor Kotov-Dartey said his organization is intent on liaising with local partners in the areas of infrastructural development as well as the improvement of the power situation in Ghana.

His organization, he indicated, is also interested in the establishment of a national telemedical system in Ghana, including the establishment of a hospital in Ho, while fostering sister city projects between Ghana and Russia. Financing for these projects will primarily come from financial institutions in Russia.

Professor Dartey expressed his gratitude to the former President for the audience and called on him to offer the necessary guidance in exploring opportunities to boost Russian investment in Ghana.
