Queenmother undertakes development projects for communities

Enstooled as the Paramount Queenmother of the Alavanyo Traditional Area in the Hohoe Municipality at the tender age of 23, Mamaga Ametor II has executed a number of development projects for the area and other parts of the Volta Region.

These include the organisation of entrepreneurship programmes, sourcing and distribution of textbooks to schools in the Alavanyo community and parts of the region, presentation of delivery beds to some clinics in the Hohoe District and the distribution of desktop computers to some deprived schools.

The recent one, being initiated to mark the 10th anniversary of her enstoolment, is the construction of a maternity ward for the Community Health and Planning Services (CHPS) compound at Alavanyo-Dzogbedze.

Addressing a colourful durbar on the theme: “Tolerance: Key to Peace and Development,” at Alavanyo-Kpeme to mark her anniversary, Mamaga Ametor II said she was inspired to initiate the construction of the maternity block to offer antenatal and post-natal services to mothers and children.

Advice to the youth

She advised the youth to cultivate the spirit of winning and set a benchmark on positive values for themselves, to enable them to succeed in life.

The queenmother said there was no shortcut in life and that there were several distractions that could divert their attention from achieving their goals and urged them to be zealous and be able to manage competing demands within a limited time with a clear sense of direction and vision for success.

For his part, the Paramount Chief of the Alavanyo Traditional Area, Togbe Tsedze Atakora VII, said chieftaincy as an institution was constantly under evolution.

He indicated that women’s current participation in activities of the Houses of Chiefs was a positive evolution vital step to decision making, to complement the efforts of their male counterparts.

Togbe Atakora VII congratulated the queenmother on her achievements over the years, and wished her well in the years ahead.

In an address, the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs Dela Sowah, said 10 years of service to the community was commendable and gave an assurance that the ministry would work in collaboration with traditional authorities to enhance rapid development.

She decried the rise in cases of domestic violence in some parts of the country, saying more than 50,000 cases were reported in the country last year.

She also expressed dissatisfaction at the rise in teenage pregnancy and early marriages, and added that both could ruin the future of young girls.

For her part, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr (Mrs) Bernice Adiku-Heloo, called on the people to tolerate each other, especially during the upcoming election. She stressed the need for self-discipline and comportment in life since they were requisite virtues for attaining life goals.
