Prime suspect in Tamale hospital CEO attack arrested

Alhaji Baba Alhassan, a prime suspect in last Monday's attack on the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. David Zaawumya Akolbila has been arrested.

Alhaji Baba Alhassan was picked up by the police at his hideout in Tamale on Thursday morning.

He is a member of the regional communications team of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and was captured on video speaking on behalf of the Kandahar Boys, a pro-NPP group, moments after they attacked Dr. Akolbila last Monday.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr. Mohammed Yusif Tanko told Graphic Online that, the suspect has been charged with assault and unlawful entry and will be sent to court soon.

On Wednesday, four persons were picked up by the police in connection with the attack on the CEO, but were later released from custody after the police did not establish any evidence of their involvement.

Meanwhile, patients who turned up at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) for medical care on Wednesday were turned away because of a strike by doctors and other health professionals at the facility in solidarity with the CEO.

Not even emergency cases were attended to and many patients, who were unaware of the strike, were left stranded at the Out-Patient Department (OPD).

The hospital staff attended to only patients on admission.

The strike was declared last Tuesday.
