Prez Mahama cuts sod for military barracks in Wa

President John Dramani Mahama yesterday cut the sod for the construction of a military barracks at Wa in the Upper West Region.

This is in line with the government's promise to construct barracks in all the regions. 

The barracks will be occupied by a detachment of the Airborne Force based in Tamale in the Northern Region. 

The one-year project, to be funded by the government, is being executed in phases by Bunas Company Ltd.

Residential accommodation

At the ceremony, President Mahama said it was the duty of the government to ensure that each region had a military barracks to promote security and peace in the country.

For a start, he said, residential accommodation, parade grounds and mess for the men and officers would be constructed.

Basic School

The President also inaugurated a 12-unit classroom block for the Wa Prisons Basic School Complex, a project funded by the GETFund.

He underlined the importance that the government attached to education and said it would provide quality education for some of the inmates who were serving various terms of imprisonment. 

Wa Prisons Basic school

President Mahama expressed the hope that the inmates would make good use of the school to enable them to acquire skills which would earn them good income upon their release.

He gave an assurance that similar projects would be undertaken in other parts of the country. 

The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mr Emmanuel Yao Adzator, expressed gratitude for the visit and thanked the government for the execution of the project.
