Potable water, a challenge to Gushegu

These were concerns expressed by Mr James Lomotey, the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Facilitator of the Gushegu Area Development Project of World Vision International, during activities to mark World Water Day in Gushegu.

He said looking at the precarious nature of water in the district, some NGOs and international organisations including World Vision, Wateraid, New Energy, Norst, UNICEF and World Food Programme had made various interventions to ameliorate the situation but with little success.

He therefore admonished all stakeholders in the water sector in the district to give a serious thought to the theme of the celebration, which was “International Year of Co-operation” and cooperate to address the water situation in the district.

The Gushegu District Coordinating Director, Mr Jimba Mohammed Ibrahim, used the occasion to announce that Kpatiga would soon benefit from a small town water project to be implemented by Norst.

He said the project had already been advertised for contractors to bid for consideration. He also thanked the World Food Programme, UNICEF and the Ghana Social Opportunity Project for assisting the district to construct and dredge more than 20 dams and dugouts in the district.

Later, a team of World Vision and district assembly officials inspected some toilet and water facilities at the Gushegu Senior High School. The Headmaster, Mr Inusah Nuhu, appealed to the officials to help the school solve its water problems.

He also said the school had only one water tank which was woefully inadequate to serve the entire school population and added that  the situation was affecting academic work as students spent long hours waiting for their turn to fetch water, while others sneaked to town under the pretence of looking for water.
