The exercise, which was undertaken at Tesano last Wednesday, is part of an ongoing exercise by the MTTD, in partnership with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Bloomberg Philanthropies, to reduce the carnage on roads in some parts of the metropolis.

It is also to end pedestrian knockdowns mostly caused by speeding at major intersections such as the Anyaa School Junction, the Weija STC traffic light, the Opeibea intersection, the Tesano stretch of the N4 among others.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mrs Effia Tenge said the exercise was undertaken after it was observed that some motorists were not driving within the 50 kilometers per hour (50kph) speed limit in the city as stipulated by law.

Stringent measures

The MTTD, she said, had noted that the situation called for stringent measures to enforce the laws against speeding of vehicles in the metropolis.

She said there had been earlier operations at various locations such as Korle Bu, Anyaa, Kojo Thompson Road, Kawukudi among others.

Persons arrested during the earlier operations were arraigned before the motor courts and were fined between GH¢ 350 and GH¢ 2,400 on the average.

She said those arrested during the Wednesday operation at Tesano for flouting the speed limits were processed and put before the Abeka Motor Court.
