Police arrest six for possessing 35 bags of Indian hemp

The police last Saturday arrested a 72-year-old man, Kwaku Sampane, and five others at Hiamankyene, near Nsawkaw in the Tain District in the Brong Ahafo Region, for allegedly possessing 35 bags of leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The other suspects are Illiasu Bayor, 35; Kwaku Emmanuel, 25; Kwabena Durubo, 30; Augustina Dongazi, 26, and Juana Kwabisie, also 26.

 

The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent Alhaji Mahama Arhin, told the Daily Graphic that on Saturday, November 7, 2015, the police had a tip-off that the people at Hiamankyene, a small farming community, were engaged in the narcotic drug business.

He said at 11.30 p.m. on that day, the police went to the village and conducted a search in the various houses, during which the 35 bags of the suspected leaves were seized.

Supt Arhin said the six people who were arrested during the swoop were currently in police custody in Sunyani.

He explained that the exhibits, which were also in police custody would be sent to the crime laboratory for examination, while the suspects were being screened.
