Briefing

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Effia Tenge, said the victim, whose name has been withheld, reported the theft at the Airport Police station.

According to him, he arrived in Ghana at about 7:30 a.m. on March 14, 2018 and hired the taxi with registration number GW 8242-17 from the airport to East Legon.

He said upon reaching the Accra Shopping Mall, he told the driver he wanted to buy a mobile phone SIM card, and left his bag in the taxi.

When he returned a few minutes later, he realised that the taxi was not at the car park.

Investigations

During investigations, the police found that the Closed Circuit Camera Television (CCTV) at the KIA captured the taxi and the driver when the American boarded the cab.

When the police searched for the registration number of the car, it traced the owner to Darkuman in Accra.

And on March 16, police intelligence led to the arrest of Martey at Aflao in a commercial vehicle on his way to Denu.

An amount of $2,100 and GH¢1,407 was found on him. In a later search of his house at Teshie, in Accra, the police found a bag and other items which the American identified as belonging to him.

The police also found a passport with the name Veronica Kyeremaa and some bags in the room.
