Police arrest 130 suspects over robberies

Following recent robbery attacks on individuals, forex bureau and mobile money transfer vendors, the police have arrested 130 suspected criminals in separate swoops in parts of Accra in an effort to rid the national capital of criminals.

The swoops were carried by the Nima, Kaneshie and Weija Divisional Police Commands.

Briefing journalists after the operations which were carried out at dawn on Friday, March 15, 2018 simultaneously in all the divisional commands, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mrs Effia Tenge, said the police swooped suspected criminal dens in their jurisdictions.

At Kaneshie, some suspected hideouts of drug peddlers at the Awudome cemetery, Circle Avenor area, Takoradi-Dansoman Station and Bubuashie Cable and Wireless were visited.

At the end of the exercise, 35 persons, all males, were rounded up.

Among those arrested were two persons identified as Kwaku Stephen, 21, and Mohazu Alhassan, 47, who were found with some quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The police also retrieved three pairs of scissors from the two suspects and impounded 12 motorbikes from the various points visited.

At Taifa Burkina, the Madina Divisional Police arrested 24 suspects at some drinking spots near the Taifa Polyclinic.

During the exercise, the police retrieved a substance known as ‘shisha’, which was suspected to be a narcotic substance.

In a similar exercise at the Dome cemetery, the team arrested four others who were also detained for screening and profiling.

In the Nima Divisional Command, a team led by the Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Abraham Acquaye, conducted the swoops within Nima, Kotobabi and Adabraka in a bid to apprehend suspected criminals.

In all, 17 suspected criminals were arrested from their hideouts, and substances suspected to be Indian hemp were found on five of them.

One person was also arrested by the Kokrobite Police for allegedly snatching the handbag of a British national resident at Kokrobite, who was relaxing at the beach.
The police gave his name as Simon Nii Baah, alias Shaanu, 28, a fisherman at Oshiyie.
