Parents assured of smooth admissions into SHS

Education Minister, Naana Opoku-AgyemanParents have been assured by the Ministry of Education that measures have been put in place for the smooth placement of 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in senior high schools and technical institutes before the commencement of the 2013/2014 academic year.

“In this direction, the Computerised Schools Selection and Placement System Secretariat has been repositioned for its original purpose to be fair in the placement exercise,” the ministry said.

A statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the ministry, Mr Paul Krampah, said the ministry would, therefore, not tolerate any pressure regarding the placement exercise.

It urged parents and guardians to redirect their energies towards building an effective system of education, with emphasis on learning outcomes and relevance.

On the provision of core textbooks for every child, it said the ministry had awarded contracts to publishers to publish textbooks for distribution to public schools nationwide for the 2013/2014 academic year.

It said the distribution would start from deprived rural schools where the performance of students had been below average over the years.

The statement said the programme was to ensure that the books were available for teaching when schools reopened in September for the 2013/1014 academic year.

It, however, expressed concern over the sale of some of the books the ministry had paid for on the open market.

“This is illegal.  Every effort is being made to bring the offenders, distributors, sellers and buyers to order.

The ministry is, therefore, soliciting the support of the public not to purchase the books on the open market but wait for the supply of the textbooks to the schools,” it said.

It said the ministry would not spare any person or group of people whose activities frustrated that laudable initiative.

In another development, the statement said the ministry, in consultation with its stakeholders, was making efforts to ensure the standardisation of school fees at all levels of education in the country.

The ministry, therefore, entreated the public to co-operate with it to ensure that all unauthorised levies in our educational institutions were effectively removed.
