Pantang Hospital expresses discontent over encroachment

The Management of the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital in the Ga-East Municipality has expressed concern over the erection of structures on a vacant land in front of the hospital.

It said the illegal structures posed a grave danger to the hospital and, as such, urged the government to take steps immediately to have them stopped.

The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Anna Dzadey, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, accused the Ministry of Health of looking on unconcerned even though the hospital had on countless occasions reported the matter to them.

Information gathered by the Daily Graphic indicated that the encroachers on the land were traders who had invaded the land and mounted wooden structures and disused metallic shipping containers ostensibly to conduct business.

The situation

On a visit to the hospital, the Daily Graphic observed that the land in question was situated in front of the hospital with the illegal structures on it blocking the frontage of the hospital from public view.

There were also visible signs of raised platforms suggesting that there were more structures that were to be put up.

A beautician was noticed busily attending to customers in one of the containers which was opened for business.

Cause for alarm

Dr Dzadey said although the situation had not gone out of control yet, the government and the Ministry of Health, nonetheless, must take measures to protect the piece of land in front of the hospital.

She said the structures had been haphazardly put up, creating a horrible sight. Rather, she said the land could be used to plant flowers and trees to beautify the frontage of the hospital.

She said a flower garden would provide a sense of warmth and comfort to families and patients who visited the hospital.

Encroacher

A shop owner, who did not want to be identified, said the land in question had remained unused for so long that it had become a habitat for snakes and other reptiles.

He, therefore, wondered why the hospital had developed interest in the land now, when others had struggled to clean up the place and made it attractive.
