OccupyGhana supports dumsor vigil

A pressure group, OccupyGhana, has thrown its weight behind the ‘dumsor’ vigil being organised by some notable faces in the country’s creative arts industry.

“We are calling on all Ghanaians to throw their weight behind these concerned Ghanaians in the creative industry who have decided to add their voices to speak out against the current ‘dumsor’ crisis and stage a vigil called ‘#dumsormuststop’,” a statement issued by the group said.

“We urge all committed Ghanaians to join the vigil and express their voices in what has become a never-ending embarrassment to our country,” it said.

Background

Ghana’s airwaves and social media platforms have been boiling ever since a group of Ghanaian celebrities, led by actress Yvonne Nelson and musician Sarkodie, announced its intention to organise a vigil to put more pressure on the government to end the energy crisis.

Although the police have given their blessings, the organisers are struggling with a starting point for the event after the authorities of  the University of Ghana, the original starting point of the event, declined to host the event.

The Total Filling Station close to the university campus has also closed its doors to the event, citing the potential danger involved in having naked flames around the fuel station as the reason.

The Ga Traditional Council has also petitioned the Greater Accra Regional Minister against the vigil, stating that it will take place during the annual ban on drumming and noise-making in Accra.

Don’t give up the fight

In that regard, OccupyGhana said it was observing the barriers being placed in the way of the organisers and urged them never to give up.

“We wish to encourage these celebrities to not sit on the fence any longer but do what they can within their industry for the interest of the country and for posterity.

“We applaud these celebrities for coming out boldly to demand that dumsor must be stopped immediately.

“We also condemn those of our body politic who have decided to attack the personalities of these celebrities and tried to spin a political twist to what they are demanding to be fixed in the interest of the country,” it said.

The statement also urged all Ghanaians to stand up and fight against bad leadership which was the bane of all we were going through as a nation.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has asked Ghanaian artistes not to allow politics to creep into the creative industry.

In a tweet last  Friday, the President reminded artistes about the “bad divisions” in the country’s politics and cautioned them against playing into it.
