The exercise was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility to educate local communities on appropriate waste disposal, as well as reduce the impact of waste on the environment. Over 600 participants joined the local community members to rid the beach of filth.

The Corporate Relations Director of GGBL, Mr Gabriel Opoku-Asare, advocated the need to build strong and sustainable local communities to enrich the lives of people.

That, he said, was underpinned by the belief that businesses and communities were inseparable.

“Industry has been working assiduously to find a long-term solution to the plastic waste management in Ghana,” he said, explaining that the company was involved in finding such solutions.

The Marketing Director of GGBL, Mr Kweku Sekyi-Cann, said Malta Guinness was using its 30th anniversary celebrations to rally all well-meaning Ghanaians to the beach-cleaning exercise.

“As a brand with purpose, we believe that goodness thrives best in cleanliness.

“In subsequent weeks, we have lined up a series of exciting activities which celebrate and reward consumers’ loyalty to the brand Malta Guinness,” he added.

He explained that the company would continue to be an effective part of the socio-economic development of the country and further expressed its appreciation for the support that the communities gave to the programme.

The Coordinator of NShoreNa, Mr Kojo Akoto Boateng, also reiterated the group’s commitment to save beaches.

He said NShoreNa had, over the years, worked on creating awareness and, in most instances, organised exercises to rid some of the beaches of waste and restore them to their naturally clean state.

“One of the key beach restoration exercises was carried out last year in partnership with GGBL at the Sakumono Beach. Our aim is to showcase Ghana's tourism potential and environmental challenges along our beaches,” he said.

He added that his outfit had identified management of plastics, effective waste disposal and collection for communities, as well as the provision of affordable toilets for homes and communities as the three key things that needed to be tackled to ensure that the country’s beaches were clean and attractive to tourists.

After the exercise, GGBL presented some dustbins to the community.
