'NHIS voters': EC presents list to Supreme Court registry

The Electoral Commission Wednesday afternoon presented a list of persons on the electoral roll who registered with National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards to the Supreme Court registry.

The commission had earlier in the day presented the names at the Supreme Court Registry but could not go ahead to file the names since they presented only one copy instead of the five copies required.

A source told Graphic Online’s Emmanuel Ebo Hawkson that since the Commission presented only one copy, the registry asked them to go back and present five copies to cater for the five justices hearing the case.

Today marked the end of the six days deadline the Supreme Court gave the commission to present the names.

An official of the EC later returned to the registry to file the copies required before the close of work.

Graphic Online gathered that the EC also filed at the apex court registry how it intended to comply with the court's judgement on the voters register delivered on May 5, 2016.

The Supreme Court Supreme Court last Thursday ordered the EC to, within six days, furnish it with the full list of all those on the electoral roll who registered with National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards.

The court also ordered the EC to, within the same period, furnish the court with how it intended to comply with the court’s judgement on the electoral register delivered on May 5, 2016.

“The two orders are to be complied with by the commission on or before the 29th of June, 2016,’’ the court, presided over by the Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, said.

It had, in the May 5 judgement, ordered the EC to take immediate steps to delete or clean the names of minors, those deceased and those who registered with NHIS cards from the voters register to comply with the 1992 Constitution.

The order followed an application by Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako, the original plaintiffs in the suit that led to the judgement.

Their application is seeking the court for clarification and further direction on the judgement.

As to whether the highest court of the land will be satisfied with the list or not will be determined on Thursday during the continuation of the hearing of the application.
