NGO donates tricycle ambulances to health facilities in four districts

The Christian Children's Fund of Canada (CCFC), a child centred non-governmental organisation (NGO), has donated 10 tricycle ambulances to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to help improve maternal and child health care in the rural and hard-to- reach communities in four districts of the Northern Region.

The ambulances, procured at the cost of GH¢112,200, would be distributed to 10 health facilities in the Nanumba North and Savelugu municipalities and the Nanumba South and Saboba districts to address challenges health facilities in those areas are facing in transporting the critically sick, especially pregnant women and children, to the health centres.

The tricycles were presented under the CCFC’s maternal and child healthcare project titled: " Promoting Maternal, Newborn, Infant and Child Sustainable Health Efforts (PROMISE).

The ambulances were funded by the Global Affairs of Canada through the CCFC, and this brings to 19 the total number of ambulances donated so far under the PROMISE project.

It is expected that with the ambulances in place now, maternal and child mortality in the beneficiary districts will be reduced.

Outcome

At the hand-over ceremony in Tamale, the Country Director of CCFC, Mr George Baiden, expressed the hope that the project would help improve maternal and child health care in rural communities in the beneficiary districts.

He said the CCFC would continue to collaborate with its partners and all other stakeholders, including the GHS, to improve the wellbeing of mothers and children.
Mr Stephen Amoako, the Chief of Party (CoP) of the PROMISE project, said there were additional funds provided for the maintenance of the ambulances and to train riders.

Commendation

He said apart from providing the ambulances CCFC had also supplied essential medicines and equipment to the health centres to enhance their operations.

The Chief Pharmacist at the Northern Regional Health Directorate, Dr Dominic Otchere, who received the ambulances on behalf of the GHS, thanked CCFC and commended the organisation for their support.
