New Juaben Traditional Council conducts first baseline survey
The New Juaben Traditional Council has conducted the first baseline survey of its historic initiative to implement the root-Based Economic Development (r-BED) model designed by the Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Professor (Emeritus) Oti Boateng.
The survey elicited information on basic development concerns in New Juaben such as demographic characteristics, existing infrastructure, economy, health, education and agriculture, beneficial community engagements with various stakeholders such as the central government, the private sector, investors and service providers.

The exercise, which gathered field information from 1,100 households in the traditional area made up of the New Juaben North and South municipalities, was carried out from February 4 to February 7, 2020.
Led by the Gyaasehene of New Juaben, the team of interviewers and supervisors included root-Based institutional members and interested teachers in the New Juaben Traditional Area.

A press signed and issued by Daasebre Prof. Oti Boateng, gave the assurance that the full report of the survey would be published after all the relevant tabulations and analysis relating to them had been completed.
It said information would make available a credible baseline data to assess the basic needs of communities and the best policy measures to respond to such need.
“It thus provides an informed basis for effective planning and implementation of the root-based sustainable development initiatives involving the active participation of the citizenry in the traditional area,” it said.
What is root-based model
The award-winning root-Based Economic Development model of Daasebre Oti Boateng is an internationally-acclaimed development model (r-BED), which, he said, had the potential to significantly reduce corruption and set the nation on the path to development.
It also seeks to push for sustainable development at the grassroots with the active involvement of the citizenry, the government and the private sector in partnership with traditional authorities.
Beneficiaries of report
The statement noted that the government and the private sector, as well as other stakeholders interested in the sustainable development of the traditional area, were expected to benefit from the authentic data collected.
It noted that the field data-capturing utilised a high technology process of covering the questionnaire developed by the Traditional Council through census and survey processing (CSP) software onto an electronic device to ensure better efficiency and reliability in the data collection mechanism.
Sampling
The statement said a two-stage systematic sampling design was adopted to select the enumeration areas (EAs) in each of the 12 communities constituting the traditional area and then the ultimate sampling units of households within the selected 81 EAs.
“The second stage sampling involved the systematic selection of 14 households from each selected EA, thus leading to an overall sample size of 1,134 households from whom information was collected on the various aspects of development,” it said.
Training
It pointed out that prior to the conduct of the survey, a two-phased training programme was organised for the supervisors and interviewers including established root-Based institutional members and interested teachers in the New Juaben Traditional Area.
It said the six-day training session from January 27 to February 1, 2020, was based on a 19-page community questionnaire, which had been specifically developed to elicit information on basic development concerns in the area such as agriculture, economy, health, education, existing infrastructure, among others.
“The training session provided a unique opportunity of bringing together a rare and free mix of Nananom from the Traditional Council and the various community representatives under one roof to exchange ideas on a common theme of their aspiration for sustainable community development,” it stated.
