The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has rehabilitated and expanded the operating theatre of the Metropolitan Hospital in Cape Coast.
The old facility, which comprised one main operating theatre, now has two major theatres, a minor theatre and a recovery room.
The Medical Superintendent at the hospital, Dr D.G. Demenya, said now patients, particularly pregnant women, who needed to be operated upon, did not have to wait.
“Now we can do two cases at the same time, and this is really great for us,” he said, adding that it would enable the hospital to promptly deal with cases and reduce casualties.
Dr Demenya said before the rehabilitation and expansion of the facility, many cases that needed urgent attention and operation had to be referred to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
He thanked the NLA for the support and further appealed for more support for the rehabilitation of the maternity ward, which leaks.
The Head of Security and Special Projects of the NLA, Colonel Yaw Dzotefe-Mensah (retd), who handed over the rehabilitated facility, said the gesture was in response to an appeal by the hospital for support for its operating theatre.
He said the NLA’s corporate social responsibility focused on education, health and culture and called on the citizenry to patronise NLA’s games, saying it was a win-win situation as profits would go into helping the development of the nation.
