NADMO supports fire, flood victims

Residents of Odawna and Adabraka who were rendered homeless during last Wednesday’s flood and fire disaster in Accra have received relief items from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The items – which included second-hand clothings, buckets, basins, insecticide treated nets, mattresses, soap, gallons and umbrellas – were handed over to over 200 victims of the flood.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Coordinator in charge of the Osu-Klottey Sub-Metro office of NADMO, Mr William Ayensu, said more relief items would be distributed to affected areas.

Wednesday flood
A twin fire and flood disaster last Wednesday night left more than 150 people dead.
Houses and properties running into billions of Ghana cedis were also destroyed.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GH¢50 million package to assist the victims.
He has also declared a three-day national mourning.

More on the way
Mr Ayensu said after the incident, management of NADMO spoke to some institutions to assist it to support the affected victims.
“We were able to mobilise these items,” he said.
According to Mr Ayensu, before the relief items were given to the victims, NADMO took a tour of the affected areas and realised that some communities needed urgent assistance.
“Places such as Odawna, Adabraka, Osu and its surrounding areas were among those affected by the floods,” he said.
Mr Ayensu, therefore, called on corporate institutions to assist NADMO to help the victims of last Wednesday’s flood.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to the Daily Graphic commended NADMO for the support and asked the government to “do more, since the items are not enough to restore us to our prior state”.
“I lost everything including my entire shop,” Mr Edward Agyei, a victim, said.
