As a result of that, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE),Mr Abdul Rahman Gundadow, has begun spearheading efforts to revive that communal self help spirit among residents by organising regular clean-up campaigns in the metropolis as a way of improving on sanitation. One of such clean-up exercises was held last weekend.

Another strategy of the TAMA is the provision of 50 litter bins and comic books on sanitation to 10 schools in the metropolis. It is envisaged that selected schools would be worthy ambassadors of sanitation issues by educating residents on those issues. The beneficiary schools are the Anbariya, Sakasaka, Nyohini and Zogbeli cluster of schools, Lamashegu Junior High School, Police Barracks Schools, Dabokpa/Dakpema Junior High School, Seventh Day Adventist/Dakpema Primary/JHS, Tamale Presbyterian JHS and Presbyterian/Methodist Primary/JHS.

The MCE stated that about 70 per cent of the assembly's resources went into addressing sanitation issues. He said during the first quarter of this year, the assembly spent about GH¢181,000 on sanitation.

Mr Gundadow noted that such an amount could have been spent on providing infrastructure for the metropolis or providing income generating activities for the teeming unemployed youth in the city.

According to him, efforts are underway to ensure that clean-up exercises are organised at least once a month.

He equally promised to visit the beneficiary schools regularly to ensure that they put all the facilities to good use.

The Metropolitan Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Abdul Rahman Saani, pledged on behalf of the beneficiary schools to put the facilities to good use.

He entreated the schools not to waste the opportunity given to them to become ambassadors of sanitation issues.

The Gulkpegu Naa, Alhaji Abdulai Alhassan, commended the MCE for initiating such efforts but stressed the need for him to address the issue of youth unemployment in the metropolis.
