A Moroccan national has been dragged before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing 514 mobile phones valued at $133,867 belonging to her employers. The accused, Sophia Marais Kardani, a sales attendant of Itsalat International Ghana Limited, a mobile phone retailer, is alleged to have sold the mobile phones and failed to account for them to her employers.

Sophia has pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing and has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢600,000 by the court presided over by Mrs Ruby Naa Adjeley Quaison.

The bail conditions include two sureties with one to be justified. The accused has also been ordered by the court to deposit her travelling documents at the court registry.

The case has been adjourned to April 10, 2017.

Facts

The Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Stephen Adjei, informed the court that Sophia was employed by Itsalat International Ghana Limited in 2015 to take charge of the Marina Mall branch of the company.

In 2016, the company, he said, detected that Sophia could not account for phones that had been supplied to her for sale.

“The situation alerted the company to take stock at the Marina Mall branch. The stock taking revealed that 514 assorted mobile phones supplied to Sophia and amounting to $133,867 could not be accounted for,’’ he said.

ASP Adjei stated that Itsalat reported the incident to the police and Sophia was arrested.

During investigations, he further said, Sophia stated that she sold the mobile phones to some individuals on credit and they were yet to pay for them.

“Sophia gave the names and contact numbers of the individuals she allegedly sold the phones to on credit, but when they were contacted, they denied purchasing any phones from her,’’ the prosecutor added.
